LA Galaxy finalizing signing Gabriel Pec from Vasco da Gama for club-record fee
The LA Galaxy is finalizing a deal to sign Brazilian winger Gabriel Pec from Vasco da Gama, sources briefed on the deal tell The Athletic.
The Galaxy will pay a transfer fee around $10 million, sources add. He would fill one of the club's two open designated player (DP) spots behind Riqui Puig. Brazilian newspaper Globo is reporting that the teams have mostly agreed to terms, but Vasco is hoping to keep a percentage of any future sale as well as add a bonus tied to goals scored. The Galaxy's record transfer fee was for Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, which was also around $10 million.
Gabriel Pec, 22, has spent his entire career with Vasco, accruing 178 first team appearances. He had his most productive season in 2023, with eight goals and four assists in 37 top-flight appearances (2,623 minutes). He has made his most appearances at right wing, which is where he would likely slot in for the Galaxy, but can play on either flank and occasionally through the middle.
The Galaxy has been in the market to add multiple attacking DPs this winter. Specifically, the club was aiming to acquire a player who could be goal-dangerous and eliminate players on the dribble, to complement the more creative Puig and Diego Fagundez. Gabriel Pec could fit that bill.
Among wingers in Brazil's top flight, Gabriel Pec was in the 91st percentile in non-penalty xG, 93rd percentile in non-pen xG + xA and 67th in successful take-ons, per FBRef. All stats per 90 minutes.
The Galaxy had a $12.5 million bid rejected by CA Talleres for Paraguay international winger Ramon Sosa earlier this offseason and talks have been inactive, sources briefed on those talks added.
