Vasco aceito na Supercopa

Ha' muito tempo o Vasco lutava para ter o seu titulo oficialmente reconhecido. Isto lhe daria direito a reivindicar uma vaga na Supercopa, torneio disputado entre 1988 e 1997 que reunia todo ano todos os campeoes sul-americanos do passado.

Finalmente, no inicio de 1996, o Comite Executivo da Conmebol (Confederacao Sul-Americana de Futebol) reconheceu o Vasco como o primeiro campeao sul-americano de clubes e confirmou a sua participacao como o sexto representante brasileiro na Supercopa, a partir de 1997. A decisao foi praticamente unanime a favor do Vasco, tendo o unico voto contra partido do representante brasileiro, o advogado Michel Assef, dirigente do Flamengo (quem mais poderia ser?).

A decisao incluiu o Vasco no seleto grupo formado por Sao Paulo, Gremio, Santos, Cruzeiro e Flamengo, todos campeoes da Libertadores. Os dirigentes vascainos decidiram reivindicar a vaga na Supercopa depois que souberam da existencia de um livro da propria Conmebol, sobre a historia da Copa Libertadores, que logo no primeiro capitulo afirmava que a competicao teve seu embriao em 1948, com a disputa do I Campeonato Sul-Americano de Clubes Campeoes, em Santiago do Chile, do qual o Vasco foi campeao invicto. A Conmebol nao poderia negar um fato que constava num proprio livro seu, editado ha' anos atras.

Como nao havia mais tempo para reorganizar a Supercopa de 1996, que ja' estava com a tabela pronta, o Vasco entao foi convidado a participar naquele ano, como consolacao, da Copa Conmebol, que reune os clubes que ficaram abaixo da segunda colocacao nos respectivos campeonatos nacionais.

A partir de 1998, a Supercopa foi extinta e deu lugar à Copa Mercosul, que o Vasco veio a conquistar em 2000.

Vasco accepted in the Supercopa

For a long time Vasco struggled to have their title officially recognized. This would enable the club to demand a place at the Supercopa, tournament that took place between 1988 and 1997 and reunited every year all South American champions of the past.

Finally, in the beginning of 1996, the Executive Comittee of Conmebol (South American Football Confederation) recognized Vasco as the first South American Club Champions, and confirmed their participation as the sixth Brazilian side in the Supercopa, starting 1997. The decision was practically unanimous in Vasco's favor, the only vote against being cast by the Brazilian delegate, the attorney Michel Assef, a director of rivals Flamengo (who else could it be?).

The decision included Vasco in the select group formed by Sao Paulo, Gremio, Santos, Cruzeiro and Flamengo, all of them former Copa Libertadores winners. Vasco decided to file a petition for the participation in the Supercopa after they became aware of the existence of a book by Conmebol about the history of Copa Libertadores. The first chapter of the book affirmed that the embryo of the competition was the I Championship of South American Club Champions, played in 1948 in Santiago, Chile, of which Vasco were the unbeaten winners. Conmebol could never deny a fact stated in its own book, edited years ago.

Since there was no time to re-organize the schedule of the 1996 Supercopa, Vasco was then invited, as consolation, to participate in the Copa Conmebol, which is played by the clubs which finished below the second place in the respective national leagues.

Thus, from 1997 on, Vasco will participate in all Supercopas every year, since they were finally, and with justice, recognized as one of the sides which were once South American champions.

After 1998, the Supercopa was replaced by the Copa Mercosul, which Vasco would win in 2000.
